The Royal Air Force Air Cadets
The Royal Air Force Air Cadets (RAFAC) is a UK-wide youth organization sponsored by the Royal Air Force, offering young individuals aged 12 (and in Year 8) to 19 opportunities to develop skills and engage in various activities. The organization comprises the Air Training Corps (ATC) and the RAF sections of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF).
History and Structure
The Air Cadet movement traces its roots to 1938 with the establishment of the Air Defence Cadet Corps (ADCC) by Air Commodore Sir John Chamier, aiming to train young men in aviation-related skills. In 1941, the ADCC was formally established as the Air Training Corps by Royal Warrant. The ATC is organized into six regions across the UK, each comprising several wings. 1206 (City of Lich field) Squadron is part of the Staffordshire Wing within the Wales & West Region.
Activities and Opportunities
Air Cadets participate in a wide range of activities designed to challenge and inspire:
Flying and Gliding: Cadets have opportunities to experience both powered flights and gliding, with the potential to progress to solo flights.
Adventure Training: Activities such as camping, rock climbing, abseiling, hill walking, mountain biking, canoeing, and sailing are integral to the cadet experience.
Leadership Development: Through courses and practical experiences, cadets develop leadership skills, enhancing their confidence and responsibility.
International Exchanges: Programs like the International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE) promote global cooperation and cultural exchange among cadet organizations worldwide.
Rank and Classification
Cadets progress through a structured classification system:
Classifications: Junior Cadet, Second Class Cadet, First Class Cadet, Leading Cadet, Senior Cadet, and Master Air Cadet.
Ranks: Cadet Corporal, Cadet Sergeant, Cadet Flight Sergeant, and Cadet Warrant Officer. Badges corresponding to classifications and achievements are worn on the brassard, indicating a cadet's progress and skills.
